Public posts are viewable only by Diaspora members?

Asked by

It appears that public posts are not really viewable by everyone of the web; when I click on a post URL when I’m not logged in to Diaspora, I get the “join Diaspora” screen instead. Is it a bug or a feature? IMHO, it severely limits the usability of Diaspora as a social network.

Correction: found out that public posts are viewable on the user’s page and on tag search, but not by URL because there seems to be no permalinks because post IDs are different on every pod. Still, a huge problem…

I just posted this (related question)…

is it possible to directly link to a public Diaspora post? i.e. if I post a link or comment globally/publicly in Diaspora is it possible to send a direct link to that post to someone without a Diaspora account so they can see the post?

I guess this answers my question though!
