Any way of simplifying Diaspora?

Asked by

Like maybe login and basic usage?

  • Couldn’t easily find login button (really, the click-on text) on the joindiaspora.com page.
  • Then unsure whether it’s just my username or maybe also my email-address to enter into the username box… it’s actually not so clear to me why BOTH cannot be used?
  • Then I need some script from amazonaws.com to be active(why?)
  • Then, do I press login button or just hit the Enter key to log in?
  • Then once somehow logged in, WHere oh Where is that darned Help button or Help feature when I really need it??
  • Then, also once logged into Diaspora, why do I have to use some external account to post a message like this at http://diaspora.shapado.com/questions/new ??

@goossbears Thanks for taking time to give this feedback.

  1. We are currently working on changing the front page layout and content, you will see some changes soon.
  2. The box says username, but both username as well as email address work.
  3. I don’t know what this means, can you explain it with more details (like which script, how it is shown etc).
  4. Both of them work, you can click on the login button or press enter.
  5. I agree there should be a better experience for new users joining. We are working on streamlining new user experience.
  6. You don’t need an account to post a question here, you can post it anonymously.

@jimmyvolatile I think it is good idea to have invite links there. I have reported this issue at https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora/issues/1631

Doors are already open for invitations, all registered users can invite any number of people they like.

Thanks for adding the issue to github :) As you say, the doors are open but my opinion is still that users who only casually inspect what joindiaspora.com has to offer will still fail to make it to the end. I’ve seen lots of people snag on ever smaller issues than this. Proof is even here: http://diaspora.shapado.com/questions/can-i-please-have-an-invite :)

The good news is that it does not take much to straighten the road :) Simply linking from joindiaspora.com to http://podup.sargodarya.de/ would solve the first step.

Yes. I could not agree more. * The button for inviting friends is at the bottom right of the page. * On the new, blank aspect-page it just says: “Nobody has said anything yet! ”Try adding some more contacts.“ which is actually a very nice message :)

Now, when I click on “Try adding some more contacts” there is no way to invite users to Diaspora or to add existing Diaspora users. The only users I can add are those who I already have.

Diaspora: Please “open the door” for new users who wish to add people they know to Diaspora and to let the people stream in from other social networks. It’s a requirement for growth, really.
